AI-EFFECT: Testing Trustworthy AI for Europe’s Energy Systems

Accelerating Trustworthy AI in Europe’s Energy Transition

AI-EFFECT is a Horizon Europe initiative building a virtual Testing and Experimentation Facility (TEF) to bring trustworthy AI into operational energy systems. Europe’s shift to low-carbon, distributed energy resources depends on AI for forecasting, control and coordination, but wide deployment requires proven safety, robustness and regulatory compliance. The TEF bridges the gap between lab research and live grids by offering standardised testing, validation protocols and certification-ready evidence.

Practical Applications: Testing AI Across Key Energy Domains

The project operates four demonstration nodes that test AI in realistic, interoperable settings. Together they address:

  • Multi-energy system coordination: aligning electricity, heating and transport systems for system-wide efficiency and flexibility.
  • Grid congestion management: AI models that predict and mitigate overloads through real-time control and market signals.
  • Secure energy data sharing: privacy-preserving techniques and architectures that allow model training without exposing sensitive customer data.
  • Distribution network optimization: managing distributed energy resources (DERs) and inverter control to keep networks stable and resilient.

By applying consistent test scenarios, performance metrics and security checks, the TEF delivers validated, secure and regulatory-ready AI solutions that utilities, DSOs and developers can deploy with confidence.

Building a Reliable AI Future for Energy

AI-EFFECT aligns with EU priorities on privacy, security, ethics and liability, producing documentation and testing evidence that supports compliance with the EU AI Act and sector rules. For operators, standardized validation lowers deployment risk and operational uncertainty. For developers, it provides repeatable benchmarks and clearer pathways to market acceptance. For consumers, it helps protect data and improve service quality through safer automated controls.

In short, AI-EFFECT moves AI for energy beyond proofs of concept toward operational readiness. Its TEF and demonstration nodes set a practical benchmark for trustworthy AI, helping Europe integrate intelligent control and coordination while reducing technical, legal and societal barriers to adoption.
